<br />
Ok so first thing's first. It's been some time since my last update. To those that have been following, I apologize for that. Life has been ... getting in the way, so to speak. Both my external and internal life. That said it'll probably be a couple more weeks until the next update. I know, I know .. what a jip.<br />
<br />
Second, the splash screen says Gorillas vs Dolphins. Thanks to some coaxing from a friend I played around with that idea for a bit. The splash screen was the only thing to really come of it though. IF .. and that is a big IF ... I decide to go back to that idea I have some ideas of how the game may evolve in look to accommodate the idea. But it's not set in stone. Forward Rush, however, seemed to be a better title for the game as is. Or at least in my own mind it was better.<br />
<br />
Next, controls. Movement stayed the same. Firing bullets changed to the 's' key and missiles to the 'a' key. Why the change? I wanted the missile and bullet buttons next to each other but I don't play a lot of computer games so I just choose something. I'm open to suggestions as to what it could, or should be though.<br />
<br />
Next, you can now set the sound and music On or off. There's no music so it does nothing. but the sound will turn off the bullet sound effect.<br />
<br />
Lastly, some of the reason why it took so long to update. You may notice the the sky is pretty bland right now. That's because most of the performance issues I was running into before where because of that sky. So I had to eliminate it. Actually, I went through a bunch of changes, even adding in elements one by one until I figured out it was just the sky is too big and gets redrawn too often. Don't worry it won't stay that way. I just need to figure out how I'm going to handle it. Also, the water REALLY got on my nerves. Like I hated it. So I did a bunch of test. Like a BUNCH. before I settled on what you currently see. The aim was to get something that looked like this:<br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHC5FzxAEmo&feature=player_embedded" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHC5FzxAEmo&feature=player_embedded</a><br />
But I never could quite get there AND keep my performance reasonable. However, if you think you may have a solution, I'm all ears. For the life of me I couldn't figure it out.<br />
<br />
So I still need to do some code clean up and what not but the game is coming along. And is actually playable on my crappy laptop.<br />
<br />
Enjoy!<br />

<br />
Not a whole lot of updates this time. I think I fixed the sound issue. Or at least I got it to work Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. I still don't know why Firefox runs so slow. I reduced all the PNGs to 64 colors and 1 alpha if they required it. That change didn't seem to do anything on my machine. I also thought maybe it was because I had several canvas elements that were drawing all the time. So I put everything on one canvas and that made things WAY worse. So that was reverted. One of the things I've read online was that Firefox handles arrays a bit differently than other browsers. I could convert all my arrays to some sort of hashtable, which I believe is just like creating an generic object. So I may give that a shot.<br />
<br />
I added a screen that says "Loading.." so that the page isn't blank while the assets load and there is a "Start" page. I also added some initial HUD elements. The player can't be hit yet, so the elements don't do anything. Except for the score. That works.<br />
<br />
Other than that, not much else has changed. determinedto3dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795315846927508719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8278337224282069661.post-48571313162063046072014-01-14T15:34:00.001-08:002014-01-14T15:34:12.039-08:00Alex attempts to make a game - Part 3: What's that noise!?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
So I went ahead and started playing
around with how I was going to introduce sound into the game. It
worked out pretty well. Actually, there is a sound test for the
enemy planes but I had to remove it. 1. Because I had an issue with
it playing over and over again. 2. Because Firefox couldn't decode
it even though the gun shot is also a WAV file. O_o So I just took the
code out and I'm going to revisit it soon. However, before that, I
need to make a loading screen. The sky got bigger and with the sound
added it takes a bit to load all the assets. So while the wait isn't
HORRIBLE, it would be nice if visitors had a pretty loading screen to
look at while things were going on in the background. But that means
I need to design one. So I'm probably going to have to do some art
for a bit. At least until I can figure out what it supposed to look
like. I've already got everything on hold until the assets load so
it shouldn't be too hard to play a little animation during that time.
Right now the bullets do nothing. Collision detection is probably
the next update.</div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Game: <a href="http://www.ootr.com/Alex/NoNameFlyingGame/">http://www.ootr.com/Alex/NoNameFlyingGame/</a> <br />
<br />
So apparently "new" doesn't
mean "new" in Javascript. Or at least it's not my
understanding of what "new" is supposed to mean. Turns out
if you have objects inheriting from other objects and so on, they
share their prototype properties. So initially when I created the
Enemy class ALL the enemies behaved the same. Or roughly the same.
Took me a while to figure out I had the use the Super Constructor
call in the base Enemy Class in order to make each enemy unique.
That took me a lot longer to figure out than it should have. Mostly,
because I got hung up on how I was instantiating the objects, so I
kept chasing a wild goose. Anyways, lesson learned. :D</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Also, I'm doing something really
hacking so that enemy objects don't clear each other off the screen.
I may need to try and generalize the rendering of all the elements,
I'm not sure. But in either case, NOW the enemies all clear
together, they all move together, and they all draw together. Like
one big happy family.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
There also seems to be a bit of a bug
that when some of the enemies go off screen they pop in right in the
center of the screen for a split second. That I'm going to need to
fix because eventually the player will die if he/she runs into an
enemy ship. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Lastly, I started on but did not finish
my sprite packer program. I need to figure out what the best way for
me to actually compile the images together after they are cropped.
An idea I had was to use Photoshop automation but I'm going to
research and see if there is a pretty decent way to do it in just C#
first. If not, or it's too difficult for my brain, I may just look
into using PS automation since I've already been researching it.

<br />
<br />
So I started this shortly before Thanksgiving. The idea is to make an AfterBurner Parity with stuff I know how to do. The next phase of this would be to add some enemies to it, which shouldn't be too difficult. The collision detection is still a mystery to me but I'm sure I'll figure it out. After most, if not all, the elements are coded I'm going to make a beauty pass. Right now the art is simple so that I can just get the point across. In fact, for a long time it was just black and white squares, but I felt that wasn't the best thing to throw up on the internet and show people. I also have to do an optimization pass to see if I can get things to run faster and just be better overall. That sorta worries me because I've already re-written things like 3 times because I found a better way to do stuff. However, since this is just for my own learning purposes and not for some client, I'm going to allow myself the freedom to make mistakes and some dumb choices. Assuming I learn something in the end of course. :D Also, this project has given me the idea to write some sort of Sprite packer. It is tedious and time consuming to arrange the plane sprite the way it needs to be. And since I'll be adding a couple different types of enemies and re-doing the plane art, it occured to me that it would be nice to create something that'll pack all those lovely frames together for me. Plus I can save space by compressing the size of the plane's bounding box on the sheet. Right now it sits smack dab in the middle of a 256x256 box on the PNG which is about 2048x1536 total. O_o I can definitely get that down though and get the file size smaller. I've been reading and doing stuff in C# and I'm pretty confident that I can make it happen. The only question is 'what to do first'? Enemies or the Sprite packer ...determinedto3dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795315846927508719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8278337224282069661.post-66053123300488531512013-11-07T20:13:00.002-08:002013-11-07T20:13:31.256-08:00Quick (2 hours for me O_O) sketchMy sister posted a lovely picture and I decided to draw it. This one doesn't look much like him either. I think MAYBE image planes might be a good way to go for measurements and stuff. Then again, maybe I should do something else. Anyways, I decided to do a little work in Photoshop as well. So here's the result of that. determinedto3dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795315846927508719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8278337224282069661.post-42029414854824341302013-01-10T18:40:00.004-08:002013-01-10T18:40:35.695-08:00Thank you, Mr. President ...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So the aim was John Spencer. I'm not done with it yet and I still need to figure exactly what is wrong with it. Mr. Spencer's head is more ... roundish. and the eyes still bother me. However, I don't think it was a bad first attempt. determinedto3dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795315846927508719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8278337224282069661.post-73098676712642411312012-12-29T03:01:00.001-08:002012-12-29T03:01:13.563-08:00Rigging done<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So I finally got around to actually putting a rig on this. I first wanted to use 3DS Max but I found it's skinning tools to be cumbersome and annoying. So I hoped back into Maya and rig it up a lot faster than I would have if I had tried to stick with Max. Aw well. I do like Max's Modeling tools better. I just don't remember max being that annoying to rig and skin things in. determinedto3dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795315846927508719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8278337224282069661.post-56723975535985064112012-12-28T13:04:00.001-08:002012-12-28T13:04:19.868-08:00Just practicing...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Taking a break from coding ... I decided to do a model based on a character I didn't create. Her name is Ino and she has one of the more interesting character designs from the Guilty Gear series. This is only phase one. That is, the high poly model is pretty much done. I need to clean up some things and prepare it to be retopologized, as well as optimizing areas for better normal map transfer. But all the pretties are here. I just Threw a bunch of similar colors on each subtool, no REAL color work done. I probably won't bother doing any coloring in zBrush and just focus on getting the textures to look right in the low poly modeling. Right now the plan is to have the jacket and hat be separate objects from the rest. Everything else will be re-topologized into one model. I also have to do the guitar. That'll come later. Anyway ... determinedto3dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795315846927508719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8278337224282069661.post-38720256172821548772012-10-22T18:26:00.001-07:002012-10-22T18:26:09.356-07:00Color ... my nemesis ... we meet again<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm thinking maybe he is more the reluctant type. Maybe his ghost companion is part of a Ghost catchers training group and he got saddled up with this kid, who just wants to hang out at the mall and play video games. Not sure. But I started sketching something closer to that personality dynamic. Came up with this. Gonna keep working on it but had to take a break.<br />

I added glass .. not much else. I keep playing around with materials still couldn't get exactly what I wanted. I also played around with the Mental Ray DoF. So continuing with my very non-serious idea to continue the KI glory, I decided to try make Cinder. Well not really, since he died at the end of the first game. However, I thought to take stab at the redesign anyways. Maybe he could be just another prisoner in the same experimental program. Who knows. determinedto3dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09795315846927508719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8278337224282069661.post-1446995800275921842012-08-30T07:59:00.001-07:002012-08-30T07:59:13.540-07:00Learning again<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So ... in my spare time I've been trying to re-learn 3DS max and at the same time trying to improve how I model hard surfaces. I'm currently, still, making this car. However, I decided to do a test render in Mental Ray based off of what I could remember. I need to look at some better ways to get more realistic renders and also I should look at composting tutorials. Right now this is a straight render from Max with about ~1-2 minutes touch up in Photoshop. When I finally get the car done I think I'll tone down the glow and maybe choose a different color for the car. I don't think I did an AO pass on this either. I should probably look into those settings, as well. Ah well. :P<br />
